history

In 1872, Duke Wilhelm von Braunschweig had a wooden hunting lodge built on the edge of a wild meadow in the corridor Zu den Winden , which was named Windenhütte , in his forest area in what was then the district of Blankenburg . About 50 meters away, the Prince Regent Duke Johann Albrecht zu Mecklenburg had the ducal hunting lodge Windenhütte built from solid stones between 1906 and 1908 .

After 1945 the hunting lodge came into the possession of the state forestry operations of the GDR, which handed it over to the Gatersleben Institute in 1955 . This used it as a vacation home for her institute employees. Since the house only had three rooms, a side extension was built in 1978 with several simple rooms on the upper floor and a dining room on the ground floor. After that it was also used as a children's holiday camp. After the job as a holiday home, a businessman from Frankfurt am Main took over the house and opened it in 1993 after renovations as a restaurant and hotel Jagdschloss Windenhütte . In 2010 it was sold to a businessman from Braunschweig who has been running the house ever since. Later on, further renovations and alterations took place, during which additional rooms were created, on which the terrace of the restaurant is now located.

The Windenhütte was included as No. 59 in the system of stamping points of the Harz hiking pin.
