The Achtermannshöhe (also called Achtermann , in the 13th century Uchteneshoge or Uchtenhoch ) in the Harz National Park is about 925 m above sea level. NHN (after an older source 924.7 m above sea level ) the third highest mountain in Lower Saxony . It is located near Königskrug and belongs to the non-parish Harz region of the Goslar district .
Geographical location
The Achtermannshöhe lies between the Harz-Heide-Straße ( B 4 ) and the 1.7 km north-east running border between Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt , which corresponds to the former inner-German border . It rises almost 5 km north-northwest of Braunlage , with the district Königskrug south of the mountain, and about 6.5 km (depending on the beeline ) north-northeast of Sankt Andreasberg , with the district Oderbrück north-northwest of the mountain.
To the north of the Achtermannshöhe lies the Odersprung as a source of the Oder , which flows through the Oderteich to the west of the mountain , and to the east, with the Kleine Bode, the right source brook of the Warmen Bode rises .
geology
The base of the Achtermannshöhe consists of the granite of the Brocken , which is exposed in a wide area between the Wurmberg and the villages of Torfhaus and Elend . Its rocky, treeless summit consists of Hornfels , a contact metamorphic rock. This rock has a thickness of about 10 m and was created from greywacke by the heating during the intrusion of the granite magma.
Hiking and viewing opportunities
The Achtermannshöhe can be reached on hiking trails - for example coming from Oderbrück and Königskrug - and is included as No. 12 in the system of stamping points of the Harz hiking pin. Until the end of the 20th century, the well-known camel spruce was located directly on the hiking trail to the summit of the Achtermannshöhe . A sign reminds of the tree.
Its summit, covered with loose rock, towers over the surrounding trees and offers an excellent all-round view - including over to Saxony-Anhalt to the Brocken . Conversely, its characteristic tip can be seen from many points in the Harz Mountains when visibility is good.
