The camel spruce was a spruce on the Achtermannshöhe in the Harz Mountains , which was known for its unusual growth shape reminiscent of a camel . It grew directly on the heavily used hiking trail to the summit of the Achtermannshöhe in the area of ​​the unincorporated Harz region .

The camel spruce germinated in the 18th century and its tip was damaged twice when it was young. However, she had always straightened up and continued to grow. As a result, the spruce initially grew 1.65 meters parallel to the ground with the formation of two "bumps" before the trunk rose vertically and formed a crown. The camel spruce reached a height of twelve meters.

History and monument protection

To protect the spruce, especially from wind breakage , it was given a supporting metal grille in 1971. At the end of the 20th century, the more than 200-year-old tree began to die and fall apart.

The camel spruce was due to regulation for the protection of natural monuments in the district of Blankenburg on April 7, 1937 Natural Monument explained. The regulation was repealed in 2008.

The camel spruce was well known and featured on postcards . As a reminder, an explanatory sign was placed near their original location. In 2016, a replica of their characteristic trunk was created, it is located on the spa pond in the neighboring village of Braunlage .
