geography

Geographical location

Lonau is located in the Upper Harz in a small area excluded from the Harz National Park at 355 to 430  m above sea level. NN . South of the center of the village, the Kleine Lonau , which flows from the Mariental , and the Große Lonau , which comes from the Kirchtal , unite to form the Sieber tributary of the Lonau , which flows through the Lonautal southwards to Herzberg .

In addition to the Auf dem Acker ridge, the surrounding mountains are the Heuer in the southwest, the Braakberg in the west and north, the Kargeskopf in the north, the Franzosenkopf and the Große Mittelberg in the northeast, the Langfast in the east, the Hirtenberg in the southeast and the Große Teichtalskopf in the south .

Local division

The village is divided into three merging parts: Unterdorf , Kirchtal and Mariental . The St. Michaelis Church is located roughly in the center of the village at the meeting point of all three locations.

Tourism and sightseeing

Lonau is mainly visited by hikers in summer and by skiers in winter. The main attractions of Lonau are the mountain restaurant Hanskühnenburg , the beech forests surrounding the place, the parish church, the Lonau waterfall , which is located in Herzberg, and a capercaillie enclosure. Starting from this enclosure, the reintroduction of the capercaillie in the Harz Mountains was undertaken for decades - but due to lack of success this project had to be discontinued. However, some animals can be encountered in the viewing enclosure of the rearing station. In addition to some restaurants, a campsite, the spa park, an outdoor pool and a mini golf course are available.

At least four hiking destinations can be reached from Lonau, which are included in the system of stamping points of the Harzer hiking needle : the Kote on the Schindelkopf , the Hanskühnenburg , the Waidmannsruhe refuge and the Große Knollen .

history

Shortly before 1592, the Lonau ironworks was built in Lonau , which had a blast furnace with an attached foundry plant. The history of the Lonauerhammerhütte is closely related to this .

Lonau belonged to the Zellerfeld district . On July 1, 1972, this district was dissolved. Lonau moved to the district of Osterode am Harz and was incorporated into the city of Herzberg am Harz.

Meaning of the place name

There are two different approaches to the interpretation of the place name Lonau :

  • In a document from 1260, the spelling Lodenowe is used. The defining word Loden means young beech shoot , sprout or twig , while the basic word Owe or Au means a river valley.
  • But the place name could also from older water names Ludena derived, which is roughly the Muddy , the loamy would mean and was later transferred to the settlement.

coat of arms

The Lonau coat of arms indicates the present and the past as well as the special features of the place. In the center of the village with the church is the confluence of the streams from the Kirchtal and the Mariental. The blue shaft should represent this situation. The people of Lonau chose the capercaillie as their heraldic animal. Not least because one has always identified with the successful work of the capercaillie rearing station for the reintroduction of capercaillie in the Harz Mountains since 1972. The beech leaf is a reference to forestry and the place name (see above). Iron was smelted in Lonau for centuries from the 13th century until 1753. A ladle and hammer are a reminder of this.
