The Große Mittelberg (also known as Mittelberg for short ) is a mountain range in the Harz Mountains that begins immediately northeast of Lonau in the Göttingen district in Lower Saxony . It separates the Kirchtal with the Große Lonau from the Mariental with the Kleine Lonau . The secondary peak, which is closest to Lonau, is not the highest peak at 531 m, but due to its prominent location it can be considered the main peak. From here, the ridge only rises slightly in a north-easterly direction, with several secondary peaks with a low notch height. In the north, the Große Mittelberg merges into the Auf dem Acker ridge without a notch .
The Große Mittelberg is almost completely forested with beech trees and is located within the Harz National Park .
