Lonauerhammerhütte

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lonauerhammerhütte , popularly only called hut at the time , is a former municipality that was located on the northern outskirts of Herzberg am Harz in the Göttingen district in Lower Saxony ( Germany ), on the southern edge of the Harz Mountains .

geography

The Lonauerhammerhütte was located on today's premises of the Herzberger paper mill, where the water power of the Sieber was used.

history

The origins of the Lonauerhammerhütte are believed to be around 1500 and are related to the Lonauer Eisenhütte. While there was enough forest in Lonau to produce charcoal for the blast furnace , the Lonau River did not carry enough water to power the heavy iron hammer . Therefore, the Lonauerhammerhütte was built a few kilometers further south on the Sieber, which carries more water at this point. The water power of the Lonau was only sufficient to drive the bellows for the blast furnace. At times, a stamping mill was also operated in Lonau .

In the 20th century, the houses in the village of Lonauerhammerhütte were gradually bought up by the Herzberger paper mill and demolished to make room for the factory to be expanded. On October 1, 1937, the community, which previously belonged to the Zellerfeld district , was taken over by the Osterode am Harz district or the city of Herzberg am Harz . After that, the name Lonauerhammerhütte was more and more forgotten because all the residential buildings had been torn down and it was no longer an independent municipality.
