geography

Geographical location

Mühlenberg is located on the southwest tip of the Harz National Park and three quarters of it is surrounded by the Harz Forest . Mühlenberg also forms the northern tip of the Hägerfeld . The Lüderholz , one of the most active sinkhole regions in the southern Harz gypsum karst landscape , begins about 400 meters to the west , with sinkholes such as the Kesselump . The Lüderholz, in turn, is cut through by the western Harz route and the motorway-like western Harz expressway ( B 243 ); It is about 1.3 kilometers from Mühlenberg to the Aschenhütte junction.

The closest settlements, measured as the crow flies, are Aschenhütte and Herzberg-Mahnte (1.6 km each) and Hörden and Lonau (2.6 km each).

history

Mühlenberg was already a field name for the Herzberg area in the 17th century.

In 1794, the Herzberg tiller Johann Wilhelm Klaproth bought the entire 11-acre corridor. By 1803 he built the first house there on the Mühlenberg, a so-called cultivation site. Since Mühlenberg was never a building area, Mühlenberg always remained in the possession of the descendants of the Klaproth family (also: Klapproth). One family branch sold its house to the Schrader family in 1882, whose descendants also live on the Mühlenberg today. At the beginning of the 20th century, Mühlenberg was also known as the "Mühlenberg Colony". Before 2000, Mühlenberg was known in the surrounding area for a restaurant that has now been closed. The operator was the Heine family (formerly Schrader).

The origin of the field name "Mühlenberg" is unknown. But it should go back to the mountain of the same name to the east.

Tourism and sightseeing

Mühlenberg can be the starting point for hikes and mountain bike tours in the Upper Harz, for example to Lonau, to the Auerhuhnschaugehege or to the Hanskühnenburg .
