The Herzberg-Seesen railway , better known as West resin route , even West resin sheet called, is a 32 km long single-track , non- electrified branch line , which on the western edge of the resin proceeds and the city and the former district Osterode am Harz opens. It is part of the shortest connection from Braunschweig to Erfurt . Train crossings take place at the usual minute of symmetry just before the hour in Gittelde . In the event of delays, crossings will take place in Münchehof (Harz) . The federal highway 243 runs largely parallel and is crossed several times along the way. The B 242 runs parallel to the south of Münchehof .
history
It was opened on October 10, 1870 from Herzberg to Osterode and on September 1, 1871 to Seesen as a connection between the southern Harz line and the Braunschweigische Südbahn Braunschweig – Salzgitter– Kreiensen . It was intended as a long-distance route; the substructure was intended for double-track expansion , so the abutments of the Sieber bridge , for example, are clearly laid out on a second track. However, this remained as well as the supra-regional importance.
In the early 1990s, the Herzberg – Seesen railway line was considered to be in danger of being closed. Since the regionalization in 1996, the re-introduction of weekend traffic and the establishment of a regular timetable have increased the attractiveness significantly. In 2004 there was a two-hour service on the route on the Braunschweig – Bad Lauterberg line, which was operated by class 628 trains. The Gittelde Nord stop was abandoned, the Gittelde station was renovated and renamed. In 2004, two new stops were opened in Osterode ( Osterode am Harz Leege and Osterode am Harz Mitte ), which replaced the previously unfavorably located access points .
With the abandonment of the route to Bad Lauterberg, the offer on the route was gradually increased. In December 2005, the operation was switched to new LINT multiple units . At the same time, the parallel bus service was reduced and an hourly service was introduced.

In the medium term, the line is to be connected to a DSTW under construction , controlled from Göttingen . The Seesen and Salzgitter Bad train stations are already connected to the DSTW. In September / October 2020 the train stations Münchehof (Harz) and Gittelde / Bad Grund (Harz) will also be connected to the DSTW in Göttingen.
