The Derneburg – Seesen railway is a former 31-kilometer branch line in the western foreland of the Harz Mountains . It was and is mainly used for regional development. The most important intermediate stops were Bockenem and Bornum , today's end point. The route between Derneburg and Bornum is still used by freight trains.

The route runs from Derneburg on the Hildesheim – Goslar railway along the river Nette to the south, hence the alternative name Nettetalbahn . Seesen and the Braunschweig – Kreiensen railway line were reached in a large loop .

This route is the most south-westerly part of the network with which the Braunschweigische Landes-Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft wanted to open up the more rural regions of the duchy . This had built the Braunschweig – Derneburg railway in 1886 . From there, construction was continued in stages to the south. On May 27, 1887, Derneburg – Bockenem was put into operation; on October 1st it went to Großrhüden . Seesen was reached over a year and a half later, on May 1, 1889. The state railway, which was formally private but was financially supported by the duchy, had its own station in Seesen, about 400 meters to the northeast from the Prussian State Railroad station. Today's street "An der Landesbahn" is a reminder of this. A connection between the railway companies was set up only for freight traffic.

In 1938 the Landesbahn was nationalized and its network was incorporated into the Reichsbahn . Since then, the passenger trains have run all the way to the Seesen state train station. Some trains changed there to the Herzberg – Seesen railway line ; At times train connections were offered from Hildesheim via Bockenem, Seesen and Osterode am Harz to Herzberg.

This route only achieved special or national importance as a diversion for the Hannöversche Südbahn for a few days . In addition to the usual problems with rural branch lines, this route was devalued by the fact that it ran directly parallel to federal motorway 7 .

As early as the 1970s, passenger traffic was reduced to five trains per day and direction; from 1982 they only drove on weekdays. In 1984 the adjoining main line of the state railway from Salzgitter-Lebenstedt to Derneburg was given up.

In the 1980s, the line was served by battery-powered railcars (class 515) , push-pull trains with diesel locomotives of the class 212 and diesel railcars of the class 614 . The last scheduled passenger train ran on May 25, 1990.

On December 31, 1995 the freight traffic was stopped; the line was closed on January 1, 1996. The Seesen – Bornhausen section is now impassable and closed , but not yet completely dismantled. In the Rhüden – Bornhausen section, however, there is already a cycle path on the old railway line.

From 1898 until its closure in 1928, a connecting railway ran from the Rothenberg marshalling yard to the Carlsfund and Hermann II potash works .

Derneburg – Bornum railway line

In Bornum, HAW Linings GmbH , which specializes in industrial corrosion protection , produces interior coatings for tank wagons, among other things . In 1996 the company leased the Derneburg – Bornum section and has been operating it since (as of 2009) as a works connection .

The HAW Linings GmbH bought 1996, the diesel locomotive HAW 9 with propeller shaft drive for their work track. The diesel locomotive was built in 1966 by Maschinenbau Kiel under the serial designation MaK G 320 B ex and the factory number 220083.

A museum railway with a Reichsbahn train from 1928, which stops in Bockenem and, if necessary, in Königsdahlum, Schlewecke, Nienhagen and Wohldenberg, runs several times a year on the Derneburg – Bornum section. The Reichsbahnzug from 1928 is pulled alternately by the steam locomotive with the number 89 7513 and by the HAW 9 diesel locomotive . The timetable is designed in such a way that after a short stay in Bornum you can return to the train station or stop where you got on.

The three-coupler tank locomotive with the number 89 7513 , built in 1912, has belonged to the Dampfzug Betriebs-Gemeinschaft Hildesheim e. V. After the restoration by their Loburg working group, it is stationed in Loburg and also operates as a museum railway on the Derneburg-Bornum railway line.

The HAW Linings GmbH presents its diesel HAW 9 of the steam train operating Community Hildesheim e. V. for their journeys with historical railroad cars on the railway line from Derneburg to Bornum.
