Mountain name

The mountain name comes from the designation sharp / pointed or rugged stone. The Scharfensteinklippe presents itself as such a rock massif, particularly from the southern point of view, but also from the west of the Eckerstausee.

history

The area around the Scharfenstein has been used as pasture by Ilsenburg since around 1420, for which the first shepherd's house was built - mentioned in a hunting letter from 1588 to Count Wolfgang Ernst Curtshofe . This cattle yard was still being managed from Stapelburg in 1816 . Around 1875 Count Otto zu Stolberg-Wernigerode had a forester's house built, which, together with the forest settlement that emerged around 1920, developed into a popular rest area for hikers and excursion restaurants with accommodation.

On 11/12 April 1945 US troops occupied the Scharfenstein without a fight. They were replaced by the Red Army in July of that year. After the founding of the GDR in 1949 and the formation of the state forest administration, organized forestry was initially resumed on Scharfenstein. Because of its location near the border with Lower Saxony , the first wooden barracks was built here in 1955. The old forester's house was torn down in 1960 and a new barracks was built in 1969 for the GDR border troops . This in turn was removed in 2000 for the national park-appropriate renaturation of the area. Around the location of the barracks, the current ranger station with two log houses was opened in 2002.
