The Poppenberg near Ilfeld in the Thuringian district of Nordhausen is 600.6  m above sea level. NHN high mountain of the southern Harz . The Poppenbergturm observation tower stands on top of it .

The Poppenberg rises in the South Harz Nature Park east-northeast of Ilfeld and north of Neustadt . Towards the south, its landscape slopes down to Rüdigsdorf Switzerland , which is part of the southern foothills of the Harz Mountains. The Kappelbach flows east of the mountain and to the northwest the landscape passes over the Rabenkopf ( 547.4  m ) and Sandlünz ( 516.2  m ) to the valley of the Bere .

On the Poppenberg there are parts of the southern Harz landscape protection area ( CDDA no. 324908; designated in 1960; 115.09  km² in size).

Natural allocation

The Poppenberg belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Harz (No. 38), in the main unit Lower Harz (382) and in the subunit Lower Harz-Südrand (382.7) to the natural area Ilfelder Bergland (382.71).

Poppenberg Tower

The wooded Poppenberg has been carrying a 33.5 m high steel frame construction erected by the Nordhausen branch of the Harz Club since 1894 , which was named after Prince Otto zu Stolberg-Wernigerode . On the occasion of the consecration of the tower on July 12, 1894, the mountain summit was christened in honor of the forest owner, Fürst-Otto-Höhe . The tower was renovated in 1994. In good visibility conditions, it offers a comprehensive view of the southern Harz, over the Lower Harz with the Joseph Cross on the Großer Auerberg , into the Goldene Aue and to the Kyffhäuser .

Others

While Poppenberg belonged to the Prussian province of Hanover until 1932 , it then moved to the province of Saxony . It is included as No. 92 in the system of stamping points of the Harz hiking pin.
