The Rüdigsdorfer Schweiz , also called Hohnsteiner Schweiz , is up to 350 m above sea level. NHN high hilly landscape near Rüdigsdorf in the Nordhausen district in Thuringia ( Germany ).
The landscape, the last intact gypsum karst area in the state, has been declared a natural heritage to be protected by the EU and is one of the smallest Swiss in Germany - there are sinkholes in many places . Most of it is a nature reserve .

Rüdigsdorf Switzerland is located in the extreme southern foothills of the Harz low mountain range between the city of Nordhausen in the southwest, its district of Krimderode in the west, Niedersachswerfen ( Harztor municipality ) in the northwest, Harzungen and Neustadt (also Harztor municipality) in the north and the Nordhausen districts Buchholz in the east as well Steigerthal in the southeast. The central villages of the landscape gently sloping to the west and south-west are the Nordhausen districts of Rüdigsdorf and Petersdorf .
The region naturally belongs to the southern Harz Zechstein belt .

In large parts of Rüdigsdofer Switzerland - between Krimderode, Rüdigsdorf and Petersdorf - lies the one-part nature reserve Rüdigsdofer Switzerland ( CDDA no. 165239; designated 1957; 3.0056 km² in size). Parts of the two-part fauna-flora-habitat area Rüdigsdofer Switzerland – Harzfelder Holz – Hasenwinkel (FFH no. 4430-304; 6.68 km²) and the seven-part bird protection area Südharzer Gipskarst (VSG no. 4430-420; 28.72 km²).
Others
In the 20th century, around a third of the natural landscape in Rüdigsdofer Switzerland was destroyed by gypsum mining. The dismantling was supposed to start again in early 2005, but was prevented by protests from the residents. There is still further mining interest in the gypsum industry.
During the First World War , a Landwehr regiment was stationed in Rüdigsdorf Switzerland.
By Rüdigsdorfer Switzerland runs Karstwanderweg , a thematic long-distance footpath, the characteristics of the landscape form opens.
