Sülzensee - Mackenröder Wald is a nature reserve in northern Thuringia .

Geographical location

It is located in the municipality of Hohenstein in the Nordhausen district, northwest of Limlingerode and Mackenrode in the Mackenröder Forest in the border area with the Eichsfeld district and the Göttingen district in Lower Saxony .

The Sete , Ichte and Weilroder Eller have their source in the nature reserve. The source of the pint is right on the edge of the forest. The Sülzensee is located in the eastern part of the protected area.

The hilly landscape on the Elbe-Weser watershed is characterized by numerous mountains: Kuhtalsberg (up to 350 m), Buchenberg (320 m), Mittelberg (318 m), Sudberg (310 m).

Nature reserve

The 280.2  hectare nature reserve has been designated as such since 2000. It lies along the state border between Lower Saxony and Thuringia and includes a forest area at the transition from the southern Harz Zechstein belt to the northern Thuringian red sandstone region . It includes extensive beech forests with a high proportion of old and dead wood .
