Steingrabental - Mackenröder Wald is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony towns of Bad Sachsa and Bad Lauterberg in the Harz Mountains in the Göttingen district .

description

The nature reserve with the sign NSG BR 116 is approximately 590  hectares . It is almost completely part of the FFH area "Gipskarstgebiet bei Bad Sachsa". In the southeast it connects to the nature reserve " Weißensee and Steinatal ", to the south-west and south it borders on the nature reserve " Sülzensee - Mackenröder Wald ". In the northeast the nature reserve adjacent to the conservation area "resin". The area has been a nature reserve since August 3, 1999. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Göttingen.

The nature reserve is located on the southern edge of the Harz Nature Park, southwest of Bad Sachsa on the border with Thuringia . It represents a section of the Südharzer gypsum karst landscape with numerous typical karst phenomena as Bach disappearance , karst springs , dry valleys and sinkholes under protection. The nature reserve has a moving relief, which is characterized in particular by forest areas and agricultural areas ( grassland and arable land ) as well as fallow areas in the north. The forest areas are mainly deciduous and mixed forests with interspersed coniferous forests , with beech forests and oak-hornbeam forests predominating. The agricultural areas and the forest areas are extensively managed, taking into account the nature conservation purpose.

Since the Mackenröder forest in the south of the nature reserve was located directly on the inner-German border during the division of Germany and was therefore hardly disturbed. a. Wildcat and black stork settle. The numerous still and flowing waters in the nature reserve are habitat for numerous fish and amphibians such as B. bullhead , brook lamprey , brook trout , crested newt and midwife toad . Furthermore, occurrences of fire salamanders and sand lizards as well as pug and Bechstein's bat have been detected in the nature reserve . Breeding occurrences of valuable birds are u. a. those of the great gray shrike , red-backed shrike , brown and stonechat and marsh harrier .

There are numerous sinkholes in the nature reserve. Sinkhole fields are the Hellengrund in the north-west, the area around the Weingartenloch in the north-east, a karst cave designated as a natural monument , around which various legends entwine, and an area in the north of the Mackenröder forest in the south of the nature reserve. The sinkholes are partly filled with water all year round, partly only periodically. They are in various stages of siltation with sedge beds , reeds and swamp bushes. Streams running in the nature reserve, some of which only carry water periodically due to the hydrogeological conditions, are mostly near-natural. However, the Ischt in the south of the nature reserve is largely dammed up to form remote fish ponds, which, however, will be dismantled after the usage permit has expired. The streams are partly accompanied by alder and ash forests. In the flood plains are moist and wet meadows to find.

Another natural monument is the "Branntweinseiche" located southeast of Osterhagen on federal road 243 on the edge of the nature reserve. This is an old oak tree that stands on a pass and used to be a resting place for the carters. The Nüxeier leader for heavy wagons also ended at this oak . The oak takes its name from the custom of the lead instructors to take a strong sip from the brandy bottle after their work is done before returning to Nüxei. The custom ended with the construction of the railroad.

In the south, a section of federal highway 243 runs through the nature reserve. The federal road is to be relocated in this area, following largely the course of the current state road 603 on the edge of the nature reserve (the state road will then be relocated to the north accordingly). The Nüxei bypass, which will run to the west of the town, will build over a sub-area at the edge of the nature reserve. A green bridge over both streets connects with the “Weißensee und Steinatal” nature reserve. The current federal highway 243 is then to be dismantled.

The southern Harz route and the Helmetalbahn run through the nature reserve southeast of Osterhagen . The area of the former Osterhagen subcamp of III. SS construction brigade, which was located in a former clay pit and in which the concentration camp prisoners were housed for the construction of the Helmetalbahn, is located within the nature reserve.

The southern Harz karst hiking trail runs partially through the nature reserve. In parts it is led on the former embankment of the Helmetalbahn.
