As Teufelsbäder refers to a moorland in Osterode am Harz . It is located in the nature reserve of the same name southeast of Augustental on the B 243 .
description
The ponds and boggy depressions in the approximately 84 hectare nature reserve are fed by the Teufelsloch , a karst spring in the high forest. They are the remains of intensive leaching of the Werra anhydrite and a representative part of the gypsum karst landscape of the southern Harz. The Big and Small Devil's Baths are fish waters created by dams and now silting up. After a few meters the drain flows into the Apenke .
In 1980 the Lower Saxony State Office for Soil Research drilled 145 meters into the karst cavities below the anhydrite. A steel pipe was mounted on the hole, from which about 1.5 liters of karst water flowed per second. With the help of contrast water tests one tried to determine the origin of the water without success.
The area, which has been under nature protection since 1984, is the habitat of rare plant species and breeding area for numerous bird species bound to these structures. The karst hiking trail leading through the Teufelsbäder must not be left.
