The nature reserve with the registration number NSG BR 002 is 120  hectares in size. It is part of the FFH area "Gipskarstgebiet bei Bad Sachsa". In the east it borders on the " Juliushütte " nature reserve , in the west on the " Gipskarstlandschaft Bad Sachsa and Walkenried " nature reserve . To the northwest and southeast, it is adjacent to the conservation area "resin". The area has been a nature reserve since March 16, 1950. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Göttingen.

The nature reserve is located southeast of Walkenried and southwest of Ellrich in the Walkenried Zechstein hill country belonging to the southern Harz Zechstein belt in the south of the Harz nature park on the border with Thuringia . It includes the eponymous Itelteich , the Itelklippen, the gypsum massif "Himmelreich" with the Himmelreich cave and the Ponte ponds, as well as other, small ponds and protects a predominantly wooded part of the gypsum karst area of the southern Harz . This is often characterized by the beech forest. In addition, areas with predominantly of ash and maple dominated ravine forests , rubble-slope forests leaved lime , elm , ash and sycamore and mixed deciduous forest to find areas.

In the forest areas there is often a well-developed shrub layer , in which u. a. Silver leaves such as the perennial silver leaf and orchids such as the red forest bird occur. The nature reserve is a habitat and a. for eagle owl and fire salamander , which is still common here.

The Itelteich lies in the west of the nature reserve. It is the largest of numerous ponds - legend has it that there were once 365 ponds, but actually there are only 50 ponds - which were created around Walkenried in the Middle Ages by monks from the Cistercian monastery Walkenried and mainly used for fish farming. The approximately 500 meter long and relatively shallow pond is located in a sinkhole . It is fed by various karst springs, some of its water also comes from the Wieda, which runs to the west . The water flows off to the east via a shrinkage and reappears around 690 meters further east from a crevice, the “goose hole” at the Pontelteiche.

To the west, the Itelteich, which is partly surrounded by reed beds and alder forest , changes over silting zones into a swampy landscape . The pond is a habitat for numerous animal and plant species. Tongues buttercups can be found in the area of karst springs . The long-lasting sedge grows in the alder quarry . During the bird migration the pond is a resting area for various migratory birds .

East of the Itelteich is the gypsum massif "Himmelreich", which consists of strongly karstified Werra anhydrite . The "Kingdom of Heaven" is a Germanic cult site from pre-Christian times. On the gypsum massif there are old beech trees with trees that are more than 250 years old.

The gypsum massif drops steeply towards the Itelteich and in the direction of the Pontelteiche. The area sloping down to the south-east bank of the Itelteich is designated as a natural monument "Itelklippen". These consist of several 50 meter high and almost vertically sloping rock cliffs.

The railway line from Northeim to Nordhausen , known as the southern Harz line, crosses the nature reserve in the north. During construction in 1868, the "Kingdom of Heaven" cut the 268 meter long "Walkenried Tunnel". During its construction, the Kingdom of Heaven was discovered on July 9th. The portals at the tunnel ends are under monument protection .

Several hiking trails lead through the nature reserve, including a section of the Karst hiking trail and the Kaiserweg trail . Hiking trails lead from Walkenried to the Itelteich.
