Steinberg bei Scharzfeld is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony town of Herzberg am Harz in the Göttingen district .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG BR 078 is about 14  hectares . It is congruent with the same name FFH area and borders many of the conservation area "resin". The area has been a nature reserve since June 2, 1988. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Göttingen.

The nature reserve is located between Herzberg am Harz and Bad Lauterberg in the Harz Mountains north of Scharzfeld on the southern slope of the Steinberg within the Harz Nature Park . It protects the southern tip of a mountain ridge made of dolomite rock . This is characterized by a steep slope with many cliffs . In the southern area of ​​the nature reserve, on the ridge and the slopes, species-rich limestone grassland and crevice vegetation can be found in the cliff areas. The poor grassland areas that have emerged from extensive use will be for the care and prevention of encroachment grazed extensively with goats. In the northern area of ​​the nature reserve, mixed forest is growing , which is used for forestry with the aim of converting it into a hardwood - beech forest.

Within the nature reserve there is the natural monument stone church , a natural cave.

Several paths run through the nature reserve. The southern Harz karst hiking trail runs along the edge of the nature reserve.
