The Göttingen Forest is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony city ​​of Göttingen in the district of Göttingen .

General

The nature reserve with the sign NSG BR 161 is approximately 733.41  hectares . It is completely part of the FFH area of the same name . It borders on the nature reserves “ Bratental ” and “ Stadtwald Göttingen and Kerstlingeröder Feld ” and is otherwise largely surrounded by the landscape protection areas “Leinetal”, “Northeastern Göttingen Plateau” and “Göttingen Forest”. Parts of the landscape protection area "Leinetal" went into the nature reserve. The area has been under nature protection since July 10, 2019. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the city of Göttingen.

The nature reserve, which consists of four partial areas, is located in the east of the city of Göttingen on the low mountain range that gives it its name . It provides large-scale, on limestone faltering beech and oak-hornbeam forests under protection. Together with the adjacent nature reserves, large parts of the forest communities in the Göttingen Forest are protected by nature conservation law.

The forests in the nature reserve are predominantly natural. The beech forests are distinctive as woodruff or orchid beech forests. The dominant tree species is the common beech . They are joined by sycamore , ash , elm and depending on the severity of the beech forests and wild cherry , stalk and sessile oak , hornbeam and field maple and wild service tree . In the herb layer, depending on the characteristics, among other things , forest rogue , wild garlic , woodruff , wood anemone and other spring geophytes as well as wood bird species , bird's foot sedge and real Solomon's seal settle . The oak-hornbeam forests are dominated by English oak and hornbeam. Field maple, winter linden , bird cherry and hazel bush are also part of this . Forest rennet , hazel root , spring pea and liverwort settle in the herb layer . The forests have a high proportion of old and dead wood . A special feature in the nature reserve are occurrences of the green broom moss .

The area is the habitat of the woodpecker species black woodpecker , medium woodpecker , small woodpecker , gray woodpecker , green woodpecker and the wryneck . Bats are represented, among other things, by the great mouse-eared mouse . The forests are home to the wildcat and the habitat of the crested newt .
