The gypsum karst landscape of Bad Sachsa and Walkenried is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony city of Bad Sachsa , the municipality of Walkenried and the non-municipality Harz in the district of Göttingen .

General

The nature reserve with the sign NSG BR 129 is 378  hectares in size. A large part of it is part of the FFH area "Gipskarstgebiet bei Bad Sachsa". The nature reserve borders on the nature reserves " Priorteich / Sachsenstein ", " Itelteich " and " Juliushütte ". The area has been a nature reserve since December 20, 2007. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Göttingen.

The nature reserve, consisting of a total of seven sub-areas, is located within the Harz Nature Park . It extends from the southern Harz foreland over the low mountain range to the southern part of the Harz in the area between the district of Tettenborn, which belongs to Bad Sachsa, and the Thuringian border at Ellrich .

The nature reserve places a section of the gypsum karst landscape of the southern Harz Zechstein belt with a large number of biotope complexes and significant remaining areas of historical cultural landscapes under protection. It is largely shaped by beech forests , in which canyon forests , caves , sinkholes , rocks and other karst structures can be found. Dry limestone lawns and bushes can be found on dry locations .

In addition to the karst structures, natural flowing waters with well-developed occurrences of alder , ash and alluvial forests as well as ponds and species-rich wet meadows are characteristic.

The southern Harz karst hiking trail runs through parts of the nature reserve.

Quarries

Within the nature reserve there are several former gypsum quarries , for example in the area between Tettenborn and Neuhof, south of Walkenried and south of Ellrich, which are designed to be natural and appropriate to the landscape.

In the roughly three hectare Lohof quarry north of Tettenborn, gypsum was mined from the early 1970s to the late 1990s . After the gypsum mining ended, the site was not recultivated in favor of nature conservation. The moving relief of the quarry with steep walls , demolition edges , spoil heaps and depressions was preserved in order to create valuable secondary habitats in which rock band communities, dry and semi-arid grasslands can settle.

The areas of the disused quarry were initially populated by pioneer vegetation , which was later displaced by ruderal vegetation . The vegetation as well as the animal world shows a great diversity of species. The former quarry is u. a. Habitat for numerous insects (especially various butterflies and sand wasps ), reptiles and birds .

Of the stone quarries on the Kranichstein to the west of Neuhof, in which gypsum has been mined since the beginning of the 20th century, only a part has been included in the nature reserve. With the aim of achieving a morphology adapted to the karst landscape , the areas were renatured and partially left to their natural succession .

The former gypsum quarry Juliushütte, located south of Ellrich, is partially included in the nature reserve. The areas that have not been used for a long time are now predominantly forested.

Pfaffenholz

To the northeast of Tettenborn lies the Pfaffenholz forest area, which is partly part of the nature reserve. The area is intensely karstified. Several very deep sinkholes lie within the forest area. Here is the shrinkage of a small stream, which is designated as a natural monument "Pfaffenholzschwinde".

Crane oak

There are several ponds in the area west of Neuhof. These are the remains of the fish ponds created by monks from the Cistercian monastery in Walkenried from the 12th century .

Around the Upper and Lower Crane Ponds there is a three-kilometer educational trail with information on nature, plaster and history. A detour to the Priesterstein branches off from this educational trail. In the gypsum rock is the Priestersteinhöhle, which was designated as a natural monument in 1969. There is also a historic gypsum kiln on the nature trail. Another detour branches off the nature trail to the Kranichstein quarry.

Again

The valley of the Wieda is part of the nature reserve from south of Wieda to the border with Thuringia. The floodplain is almost completely forested. Especially below Walkenried, where the Wieda reaches the southern Harz gypsum karst landscape, it does not constantly carry water. There is an infiltration section here . Some of the drainage channels run underground or through gravel banks .
