Himmelreichhöhle
The Himmelreichhöhle is a karst cave on the edge of the western Harz , about two kilometers east of Walkenried in the district of Göttingen in Lower Saxony , near the border with Thuringia . It is within the nature reserve Itelteich and on Karstwanderweg . The cave measures 170 m in length, 85 m in width and 15 m in ceiling height, although the interior was significantly changed by the construction of the Walkenried tunnel.
history
The cave was discovered on July 9th, 1868 while a railway tunnel was being built. The 269 m long Walkenried tunnel on the southern Harz line was built lengthways through the cave.
