Johannes von Arnsberg

Johannes von Arnsberg (also Johann von Arnsberg ) († 1319 ) was the first provost of this institution after the conversion of the women's monastery Meschede into a canon monastery .

Life

He was the son of Count Gottfried III. and the mother Adelheid von Blieskastel. Among other things, he was the brother of Count Ludwig von Arnsberg and the abbess of the Meschede Monastery, Agnes von Arnsberg . John entered the clergy and became a canon in Utrecht .

After the death of Abbess Agnes von Meschede in 1306, Archbishop Heinrich II von Virneburg decreed that the office should not be filled again for the time being, given the internal and external decline of the monastery. He transferred the management of the business and rights to Johannes von Arnsberg as administrator. His task was to secure the existing possessions of the monastery and to get back those that had been lost. However, his work was not so successful that a new abbess could have been elected. The willingness of the canonesses to forego part of their income and to take over the office of abbess was also low. An official investigation revealed further evidence of internal decay. Therefore, with the consent of the canonies, the archbishop ordered the abolition of the monastery in 1310. At the same time, the establishment of a canons' monastery with 14 canons under one provost was carried out. The first provost was Johannes von Arnsberg. He organized the new monastery and continued to restore lost possessions. He probably died in 1319.
