Finnenbruch, Großes Butterloch and Floating Island is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxon town of Herzberg am Harz in the district of Göttingen .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG BR 039 is 17  hectares in size. The area has been a nature reserve since January 16, 1979. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Göttingen.

It is located southeast of the Pöhlde district of Herzberg and northeast of Rhumspringe in Rotenberg in the Eichsfeld Basin natural area within the Harz Nature Park .

The nature reserve comprises three areas, the funnel-shaped sinkholes “Floating Island” in the north and “Big Butter Hole” in the south, as well as the “Finnenbruch” located in between in a karst depression. The "floating island" is 0.75 hectares, the "large butterhole" 2.75 and the "Finnbruch" around 13.5 hectares.

The “ floating island ” sub-area of the nature reserve is characterized by a particularly deep sinkhole that is partially filled with water. The sinkhole lake, which is fed by rainwater, shows silting tendencies due to sometimes rare marsh and bog plants growing from the shore as well as plant remains that have sunk to the bottom of the sinkhole lake. When parts of the vibrating lawn that are being formed tear off, they form a floating island on the surface of the water, from which the sinkhole takes its name.

The sub-area “Großes Butterloch” is also characterized by a muddy sinkhole in which peat moss and reed -rich low and transitional moor has formed. This is surrounded by bodies of water fed by rainwater. The swinging lawn in the center is partly covered with spruce and birch . In addition, rare marsh and bog plants can be found here. The protected area includes wooded edge zones.

Characterize the "fin break" as a growing transition Moor natural birch and alder forests with large sedge Riedern and Hochstaudenfluren . This sub-area of ​​the nature reserve includes adjacent forest areas and grassland areas.

All three parts of the nature reserve are located on the Karst hiking trail Südharz , on which the Rhume spring is located near Rhumspringe . The parts of the nature reserve are surrounded by forest and grassland.
