Floating island on the Rotenberg

The floating island is a partially water-filled sinkhole in the district of Göttingen , on the edge of the Rotenberg about 700 meters southeast of Pöhlde and about two kilometers northeast of the Rhume spring . The area lies on the border between the natural areas of Eichsfeld Basin and the southwestern Harz foreland .

The sinkhole itself is not a floating island , but named after the parts of the plants growing over the shore that occasionally tear off and floating on the surface of the water. In the meantime, a small island has been created by silting up , and in the long term the rocky bog cover will completely silt up the lake. The floating island is located on the karst hiking trail and is part of the nature reserve Finnenbruch, Großes Butterloch and floating island .
