The Josef-Albers-Gymnasium is the largest of the three Bottrop high schools with around 1530 students . Since March 1976 the school has been named after the internationally renowned painter, Bauhaus artist and art teacher Josef Albers , who was born in Bottrop in 1888.

history

In the course of more than a hundred years of history, the Josef-Albers-Gymnasium has changed its name and legal status several times. An advertisement in the local press announced the founding of a higher private girls' school in 1896 . Classes initially took place in the private rooms of a widow , in 1898 the first school building was moved into on Scharnhölzstrasse, and in 1923 the move to a building on Rathausplatz. As early as 1914, the girls' school at the time had the title Lyceum , and from 1923 the official name was the Städtisches Oberlyzeum . Two years later the first high school graduates left school. In 1952, the school's economic orientation , which had existed since 1938, was changed in favor of the newer languages . From then on, the school carried the title of Städtisches Neusprachliches Mädchengymnasium , which was supplemented in 1964 by the addition of a women's high school . As early as the end of the 1960s, boys were being taught at the school; the transition to coeducation then officially took place in 1976. With this, the school also passed the title of Lyceum ; since then it has been called Josef-Albers-Gymnasium . Since 1966 the school has had its headquarters at the corner of Zeppelinstrasse and Schützenstrasse. The old A and the old B wing were expanded again in 2001 by a modern building, in which, in addition to the specialist rooms for science , art and music , grades 8 and 9 are also housed. As of the 2010/11 school year , the school will have a cafeteria and other rooms as part of the educational midday care. The construction of a triple sports hall is part of the budget of the city of Bottrop.

School profile

The lessons at the Josef-Albers-Gymnasium are characterized by a double requirement: On the one hand, every student should receive an excellent general education and differentiated methodological competence, on the other hand, different inclinations and talents should be given space to develop. An expression of this claim is the quality seal for individual support awarded by the Ministry of Education in 2008 , which recognizes the concept of internal and external differentiation with its extracurricular events and additional offers. In the field of artistic promotion, the wind classes in grades 5 and 6, which were first introduced in 2006, should be mentioned. The students in these classes receive instrumental lessons during class time and learn to play a wind instrument as part of a class orchestra . In two of the school's own big bands, there is the opportunity to further develop the skills acquired in the sense of promoting talented students . A central focus of the school work is the promotion of MINT subjects ( mathematics , computer science , natural sciences , technology ). The scheduled lessons in these subjects are supplemented by a bundle of school and extracurricular offers: the intermediate level courses Introduction to the basics of the engineering profession and mathematics in business and finance , the concept of the Junior Academy Association of the Physics and Student Council supported by the Rüttgers Foundation multiple successful participation in competitions. This concept was honored in 2009 when the Josef-Albers-Gymnasium was accepted into the Association of Mathematical and Scientific Excellence Centers in Schools . This means that the Josef-Albers-Gymnasium is one of around 100 high schools in Germany that belong to the exclusive circle of Mint-EC schools. The traditionally special importance of foreign languages (today's language options: English , French , Spanish , Latin ) can be seen among other things. a. in bilingual offer arts English and the (price in the mid-stage differentiation) and in the certification courses Business English , Business Spanish , Cambridge Preliminary English Test and DELF scolaire certificate , which in the middle and high school are offered. Every year around 10% of all students successfully pass an external foreign language test. It is worth mentioning that five students have now passed the LCCI Examination at the highest level (level 4, native speaker ).

social commitment

Every two years there is a sponsored run for the others under the motto hiking , in which all students take part. 80% of the proceeds will go to the Catholic aid organization Misereor , which supports a street children project in the Brazilian city of Recifé . The remaining 20% go to the school's friends' association . B. enables financially disadvantaged students to take part in school trips . Until 2010, sponsored runs and other activities such as B. junk sales on parenting days, over 163,000 euros are collected. At the open house, secondary school students regularly look after a sales stand for the benefit of SOS Children's Villages .

Partner schools

For decades, the grammar school maintains extensive contacts with the French Charles Péguy College from Tourcoing , which are brought to life through annual reciprocal visits. The partnership with the Montgomery High School from the English city of Blackpool was firmly established in 2009 . As part of a Comenius project of the European Union, the Josef-Albers-Gymnasium has been working with the Zespół Szkół Ogólnokształcących nr 5 in Gliwice, Poland (formerly Gleiwitz) since 2010 . The Comenius program is called How the Other Half Lives and promotes the foreign language, historical and cultural skills of the students.

Support association

In addition to the aforementioned aid for school trips, the sponsoring association supports the school in a variety of ways. Among other things, the acquisition of musical instruments for the wind classes, the printing of the art calendar and the Anno yearbook are supported. The association also donates sensible prizes and vouchers for successful students who have won awards in competitions.
