Westliche Hainleite is a nature reserve in Thuringia .

Geographical location

The nature reserve is located in the southwest of the Nordhausen district on the border with the Kyffhäuserkreis . It includes the part of the Hainleite south of Großlohra as far as Hainrode in the direction of the Wippertal . The most important mountains are Der Berg (451.1 m), Steckenberg (423.9 m) and Kains (approx. 415 m), Lohra Castle on a mountain spur (410 m) is located on the edge of the protected area. Cuttings on the edge of the Hainleite formed by erosion are the source areas of smaller tributaries to the Wipper , such as the Renkgraben near Friedrichslohra and the Hainröder Bach .

Nature reserve

The 945.9 ha nature reserve, which was designated as such in 2004, is located in the extreme northwest of the Hainleite at the transition to the Dün and within the 1170 ha FFH and bird sanctuary Westliche Hainleite - Wöbelsburg . The NSG Wöbelsburg is also not far to the east on the edge of the Hainleite.
