history

The name "Trudenstein" is derived from the alleged resemblance of the rocks to a Drude , an old German witch-like legend. In 1783 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is said to have wandered past the Trudenstein. Caspar David Friedrich depicted the formation on a drawing in 1811. It is said to have inspired him to create a rock group in the foreground of his painting The Watzmann .

As early as 1894, ladders were first erected on the summit of the Trudenstein.
