Life

Badenhausen moved with his family to Berlin-Pankow in 1912. He had lessons for several years in the summer months at Björnsnäs Castle near Norrköping with Philipp Magnus Trozelli . After graduating from high school in 1926 in Berlin and from 1929 in Munich, he studied philosophy , German , art history and theater studies ; In 1930 he received his doctorate. In early 1931 he became an assistant at the Munich Theater Museum ; In 1935 he was hired by Otto Falckenberg as a dramaturge and assistant theater director at the Münchner Kammerspiele . There he met his first wife Elisabeth Flickenschildt , whom he married in 1936; the marriage lasted until 1944. In 1939 he succeeded Georg Dröscher as director of the Museum of the Prussian State Theater in Berlin. From 1941 to 1943, the year he was drafted into the Wehrmacht again (drafted in 1940, then placed in the UK ), he worked as a dramaturge (most recently in an executive role) under Gustaf Gründgens at the Prussian State Theater in Berlin.

After the end of the war (he was released as a private), Badenhausen taught theater history and film studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . From 1947 to 1951 he was chief dramaturge and deputy general manager at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, again under Gründgens; in 1951 he also appointed him as acting director. Badenhausen also took over the management of the drama school attached to the Düsseldorf theater. After Gründgens began working as general manager of the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg in 1955, Badenhausen went to the Württembergische Staatstheater Stuttgart in 1956 as personal assistant to general manager Walter Erich Schäfer . At the University of Music and Performing Arts there , he also took on a teaching position in the drama department .

From 1960 until his retirement in 1972, Badenhausen was full professor of theater studies at the University of Cologne and thus also head of the theater museum there. In the meantime (1962–1963) he was still active as artistic director of the Württemberg State Theater .

In 1969 and 1979 he was a visiting professor at McGill University Montreal, followed by other visiting professorships at other universities until 1981. In the 1969 TV production Rotmord, the film adaptation of Tankred Dorst's play Toller , directed by Peter Zadek , Badenhausen played the role of Professor Max Weber . In the course of his career he wrote articles for theater magazines and was the editor of several books, including a. about Gründgens. Badenhausen last lived in Munich.

Rolf Badenhausen is an uncle and godfather of the specialist journalist, entrepreneur and author Rolf Badenhausen .
