Günther Karl Georg Lüders (born March 5, 1905 in Lübeck , † March 1, 1975 in Düsseldorf ) was a German actor , radio play speaker and director .

The son of the ship owner and businessman Carl Lüders and his wife Anna Dorothea, b. Brüggen, started a commercial apprenticeship from 1921 to 1923 after attending secondary school up to primary school.

After taking acting lessons with Karl Heidmann , he became a member of the touring stage of the Städtebund-Theater in 1923. In the 1920s he played in Lübeck, Dessau and Frankfurt am Main . From 1934 he was engaged on theaters in Berlin . In the same year he got his first film role in the spy film The Island . Because of his critical attitude towards the Nazis, he was imprisoned in the Esterwegen concentration camp for three weeks in 1935 . Nevertheless, he continued to star in various films until 1945.

After the war he found employment at the stages in Flensburg , Lübeck and Hamburg . From 1947 to 1954 he played under Gustaf Gründgens at the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf. Lüders was one of the most sought-after theater actors of his time. The theater offered him more than the film the opportunity to show the serious facets of his acting personality, such as Polonius , as Elwood P. Dowd , as Captain von Köpenick or his last role as Professor Unrat in Peter Zadek's stage version of the novel. After the war, Lüders continued to receive small film roles in which he often showed his comic side. The two most famous films with Günther Lüders are probably Three Men in the Snow, based on the book by Erich Kästner , in which Lüders plays the servant Johann Kesselhuth, and The Sinful Village 1954 (role: Christian Süßbier). Lüders also worked as a film director. So he led u. a. directed in If We Were All Angels (1956) and in Your 106th Birthday (1958).

Lüders also became known as an interpreter of the poems of Joachim Ringelnatz , Christian Morgenstern or Wilhelm Busch , which he used to present in a very differentiated manner on successful recitation evenings. He brought out selections from these on speech records . But also more serious literature, such as B. Thomas Mann's Buddenbrooks , Tonio Kröger or Goethe's Reineke Fuchs tried to convey Günter Lüders speaking on lecture evenings and records.

1960 to 1963 he was acting director of the Württemberg State Theater in Stuttgart , where he was engaged as a director and actor from 1962. In addition, he made frequent guest appearances on other stages, including in 1964 at the Vienna Volkstheater in King Nicolo by Frank Wedekind (director: Gustav Manker ).

Lüders had been used as a speaker in a large number of radio plays . The ARD radio play database records well over a hundred productions for the period from 1946 alone, in which he was mainly heard in leading roles. In this profession he was not restricted to any particular genre.

In addition, he was also active in other functions in radio , e.g. In the 1960s, for example, he spoke texts for Hans Rosenthal's satirical monthly magazine Die Rückblende , which was broadcast on RIAS . In recognition of his achievements as a reciter, he was awarded the German Cabaret Prize in 1974 .

His grave is on the Burgtorfriedhof in Lübeck.
