action
Since his youth, Professor Keller has dreamed of having his own little house in the countryside. His wish seems to come true when he stands in front of the rather decrepit inn "Zum Frohen Postillion" and learns that the property is about to be sold. With his wife and their four children, Keller sets out to inspect the property and then let the family council decide whether to venture into the business. To the disappointment of the head of the family, the decision is not what he would have liked. Nevertheless, as soon as he is back in his rented apartment, he begins to do the math: purchase price, mortgage, down payment, etc. However, it is difficult for him to concentrate because not only the radio but also his children are noisy. When Keller utters a few mocking words about her admirer to his daughter, she angrily hurries away. Thomas, the youngest member of the family, becomes rebellious once again, and Dreas doesn't feel like studying for his physics. Only Mother Friedel does not allow herself to be disturbed.
In order to be able to realize his plan to buy the former restaurant, Keller sends his wife to the long overdue cure, especially since Friedel is his greatest opponent in this matter. Suddenly everyone agrees to buy, renovate and move the house they are considering as long as the mother does something for her health. Keller accompanies his wife to the health resort. As soon as the parents are out of the house, their offspring become cocky. When papa comes back and a deafening noise hits him from his apartment, his mood immediately worsens. Only with great effort does he manage to restore order.
Friedel Keller did not last long in the cure and returned early. On arrival, she is horrified to find that the apartment has been vacated. Elsbeth, her housemaid, tells her about what has happened. She immediately sets out to surprise her relatives in the new house, which she succeeds in doing. Despite her anger, she immediately helps to move the furniture into the right place. After the work is done, however, she also has to realize that the purchase of the property was a good thing.
additions
The outdoor shots were made in Göttingen, the indoor shots in the studios of Bavaria Film in Grünwald- Geiselgasteig . The buildings were designed by the film architects Emil Hasler and Paul Markwitz . Maria Brauner contributed the costumes.
For the cameraman Fritz Arno Wagner this was the last film, he died in an accident at work during the shooting. His colleague Karl Löb finished the recordings.
criticism
The lexicon of international films describes the film as less content and less imaginative than its predecessor “Father, our best piece”. At the same time, it is criticized that Ode staged more lively than his predecessor Lüders.
