Paul Markwitz
Paul E. Markwitz (born July 16, 1908 in Berlin ; † March 19, 1968 there ) was a German film architect .
Live and act
Markwitz went through a practical, manual training and recommended himself in his capacity as a talented carpenter for the film . At the end of 1931 he began to work in a subordinate role for cinema productions, initially even in Hollywood ( The Crowd Roars, Alias the Doctor ). In 1934 he was allowed to work for the first time as assistant production designer in the creation of film structures and was assigned to colleagues Heinrich C. Richter and Hans Jacoby .
Markwitz's early works include two productions by Erich Engels with Karl Valentin and Liesl Karlstadt in the leading roles. Until 1939 he was involved in several other prominent films, including Sergeant Berry with Hans Albers , Veit Harlan's Sudermann adaptation Die Reise nach Tilsit and the revue film We dance around the world . Shortly after the outbreak of war in 1939, Markwitz was drafted.
After his release from captivity, Paul Markwitz returned to Berlin, where he resumed his work in film in 1948. He realized the designs of important colleagues such as Fritz Maurischat , Ernst H. Albrecht , Emil Hasler and Heinrich Weidemann . His field of activity was mostly low-content entertainment films: mainly comedies, operettas and music revues, but also a few more ambitious, dramatic subjects such as the American film production Des Teufels Erbe with Gene Kelly, shot in southern Germany, and the retelling of the events surrounding the failed assassination attempt on Hitler 1944 , It happened on July 20th . Markwitz worked for a wide variety of production companies, most recently, from 1957, almost exclusively for the Berlin CCC film Artur Brauners . His last works are commissioned productions for CCC-Television.
Paul Markwitz died at the age of 59 when, most recently unemployed, he threw himself into a Berlin canal with suicidal intent and drowned in it.
