A man on astray is a comedy film and an adventure film by director Herbert Selpin from 1940. The literary film adaptation is based on the novel Percy on Astray by the author Hans Zehrer, who publishes under the pseudonym Hans Thomas . In the main role, Hans Albers plays the Swedish industrialist John Percival "Percy" Patterson, who suddenly disappeared without a trace after a business meeting.

action

The Swedish industrialist Percival, known as Percy, Patterson suddenly disappeared after a business meeting with his partner Sully without leaving the slightest trace. Those around him assume a crime. However, the journalist Nilsen suspects a different background: He believes that Patterson went into hiding to avoid prosecution by the authorities. Patterson's daughter Ingrid tries to prove her father's innocence and travels across Europe to find him. During all the confusion over his whereabouts, Patterson sits comfortably in a small town in the Balkan Peninsulas because the harassment of his main shareholder has become too much for him. He also just wanted to avoid his pleasure-seeking daughter for once.

He arrived incognito , pretends to be Emile and does nothing more than enjoy his life. But he didn't count on the instincts of his daughter and the journalist, who find him there, despite his masquerade. When Patterson notices that he has been discovered, he takes a job as a waiter in a health resort, where he meets the singer Lisaweta, who hires him as a chauffeur. He's going to Geneva with her. Once there, he is believed to be an important representative of the people because of his smart chauffeur uniform.

The plot of the film comes to a happy end when Patterson raises enough money to buy back his majority shareholder's stock and to be able to run his company again as he sees fit. Furthermore, he found the woman for life in the singer Lisaveta.
