Harald G. Petersson , also Harald Giertz-Petersson or Harald Hans-Heinrich Gustaf Petersson-Giertz , (born October 16, 1904 in Weimar ; † July 8, 1977 in Berlin ) was a German-Swedish screenwriter .

Life

The son of a Swede and a German began his career as a writer and in the 1930s became the press manager of the Tobis production company . When his novella Herz ist Trumpf was made into a film in 1934, he began to concentrate on writing screenplays, initially in collaboration with other authors. It soon became apparent that he had an extraordinary instinct for creating tension. He became a specialist in dramatic stories from the espionage and military sectors.

In 1940 he married the actress Sybille Schmitz , who was a famous Ufa star at the time. The marriage was divorced in 1945. After that, Petersson lived with her again for some time until he finally separated from the actress who suffered from alcohol problems. Sybille Schmitz committed suicide in 1955.

Because of these personal problems, Petersson only returned to the cinema in 1958 after a ten-year break. During this time he mainly worked as a dialogue author for the Ultra-Synchron, u. a. for such important films as "The Man with the Golden Arm" and "Escape in Chains". Through his scripts, he played a significant role in the great success of the Edgar Wallace and Karl May films produced by Horst Wendlandt . In favor of an effective dramatization, he mostly deviated strongly from the respective novel templates, which was criticized by connoisseurs of these works.
