Fornjótr is a figure from Norse mythology.

Although he is described as a king in the Orkneyinga saga and in the Flateyjarbók ( Hversu Nóregr byggðisk ), his sons are more mythological figures:

Kari's son is (depending on the source) either Jǫkull ("glacier") or Frosti. In both sources, Kari is the grandfather of Snær ("snow").

Fornjótr is possibly originally the progenitor of a family of frost giants and was only later included in the historical literature. He is said to have ruled as king over Finland and / or Kvenland as well as Gotland or Götaland .

The etymology of the name is controversial.
