action

After a carnival party , the young Erika Hansen is taken by two young men in the car; when they get intrusive, she throws herself out of the car, is seriously injured and is taken to the gynecological clinic of chief physician Dr. Brückner brought. A nightly emergency operation saves her life. Dr. Brückner is completely absorbed in his work and has no private life. His patients adore him, which causes gossip among the nurses. Set designer Ursula Callway is particularly persistent, actively flirting with Brückner and finally inviting him to a carnival party. Despite reservations, he accepts the invitation and also lets Ursula invite him to her apartment for a coffee after the event. Both dance and kiss together. As Ursula is changing clothes to seduce him, Brückner calls the clinic. He learns that the heavily pregnant Ms. Mägerlein has come to the operating room with complications and leaves immediately. Ursula remains angry.

Ms. Mägerlein’s operation succeeds. The traumatized Erika Hansen is meanwhile by her sister, the lawyer Dr. Eva Hansen, visits and can talk about the incidents that night. She also trusts Brückner, in whom she soon sees a father substitute. Meanwhile, Brückner takes action in his clinic: Because he is assistant doctor Dr. When Kilian and sister Anni are caught kissing, he dismisses Kilian, since a doctor only has to be a doctor during work.

Ursula Callway has not given up on Brückner yet. Under a pretext, she allows herself to be admitted to the hospital as a patient. During the evening round, which Brückner makes alone, there is an argument between her and the doctor. Ursula hastily packs her things and flees the clinic. To her friend Rudolf Baum, she indicates that things have happened that she cannot talk about. Baum concludes that Ursula von Brückner was abused and reports him. Brückner is arrested. Since he refuses to testify, he is placed in custody. Eva Hansen takes over his defense and finds out from Brückner what really happened that evening. During the trial, which is closely followed by the media, Ursula Brückner accused of rape. Hospital employees mix their assumptions with things they learned from the newspaper and incriminate Brückner. Dr. Rott testifies against him that he could succeed him as chief physician. In addition to Erika Hansen, it is of all people Dr. Kilian defending Brückner.

At the request of Eva, Ursula initially remains under sworn. She confesses to her friend Baum that she wants to take revenge on Brückner for his indifference. He never bothered her; on the contrary, he fought off her advances that evening and left. Baum is horrified and asks Ursula not to swear perjury in court , as this would destroy a human life. Nevertheless, Ursula swears the next day that her statement was true. After her appearance, Erika overhears Baum accusing Ursula of swearing her lie. She informs Eva, who calls Baum to the stand again shortly before the verdict is announced. Baum now reports the truth. Ursula in turn flees and is hit by a car while crossing a street; she dies at the scene of the accident. Brückner is acquitted of all charges and leaves the courthouse with Eva and Erika as a free man.
