Karl Adolf Kurt Werner Klingler (born October 23, 1903 in Stuttgart , † June 23, 1972 in Berlin ) was a German actor , director and screenwriter . Werner Klingler stands for an unbroken artistic transition from the Weimar Republic through the time of National Socialism to post-war Germany . From 1936 to 1967 Klingler directed almost 30 films.

Life

Klingler began as a small actor on various stages and came to America in the 1920s, where he appeared in the German-language theater in Milwaukee in 1925 . In 1927 he tried his luck as a film actor in Hollywood and was anonymous in several productions, including the classic In the West Nothing New .

In 1931 he became a specialist advisor for German issues to the production company Universal Studios , where he met Luis Trenker , who was filming an American version of Mountains in Flames . Klingler gave up his unpromising acting career and returned with Trenker to Europe, where he served as a factotum in the Trenker film The Rebel . Shortly afterwards, in 1932, he was jointly responsible for the sound design of the adventure film SOS Eisberg .

His directorial debut Die Sündflut remained unfinished due to censorship problems, but with the initial help of Trenker, who made him his co-director twice, he finally succeeded in several action-packed productions, including the propaganda film Wetteruchten um Barbara (1941) and the completion of the anti-English one Production Titanic (1943). He was hired to do this after the director of the film Herbert Selpin was denounced and arrested by the Nazi regime.

After his first two post-war directing work, Klingler worked again as an actor in the USA, where he stayed until the mid-1950s. Back in Germany, he was called in again for various directing tasks.
