An ancient fairy tale (original title: russian Старая, старая сказка , Staraja, staraja skaska ) is a Soviet fairy tale film by Nadezhda Kosheverova from 1968 . He mixes different fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen .

action

A poor puppeteer presents his skills in a pub in the evening. In gratitude he is allowed to eat and drink freely. What the landlord has no idea is that his daughter wants to go away with the puppeteer the next morning, since he is her secret lover. The puppeteer cannot fall asleep at night and so his puppets present him with a fairy tale game:

A soldier (in the form of the puppeteer) was released from the army and is now poor in the world. He meets a witch who tells him that a well is rich in gold. She lets him down into the well, where he collects the gold in his knapsack . The witch promises to pull him up, but first wants to bring the gold back to the light of day. Contrary to her promise, she rushes away with the gold and leaves the soldier alone in the well. Using a trick, this comes to light, catches up with the witch and defeats her. Not only does he now have his knapsack full of gold - a magician who has been transformed by a witch into a tomcat regains his original appearance and gives the soldier a magical lighter as a thank you.

The soldier comes to a small kingdom into which he is admitted when the gatekeeper notices his wealth. The soldier lived a lavish life over the next few days and suddenly had many false friends. On the market square he sees the haughty princess (in the form of the landlord's daughter), with whom he immediately falls in love. He woos her like many other suitors before him, but she rejects him like everyone else. This causes great annoyance for her father (in the form of the landlord), as the kingdom no longer has any money and is dependent on a rich husband for the princess. The soldier soon runs out of money and has to move to the shabbiest hotel in the kingdom. Here he also made the acquaintance of the prince of an even smaller kingdom, who had also wooed the princess in vain. When the soldier ran out of only one candle, he remembers his lighter. When lighting the fire, the good wizard suddenly stands in front of him and explains that when he is called from the lighter, he now has to fulfill his every wish. The soldier wants the princess and a short time later the four-poster bed with the sleeping princess actually moves into the soldier's room. The sleeper wakes up and thinks she is dreaming. So she goes for a walk with the soldier over the roofs of the kingdom and is delighted when he conjures up the desired snow for her in summer. When he wants to kiss her, however, she realizes that this cannot be a dream and goes away indignantly. Her bed goes back to the castle, where the princess wakes up and tells her father about the strange dream.

The father soon has enough of the daughter's sensitivities, so he orders a wedding. The princess insists on testing all suitors according to fairytale tradition and asks everyone a tricky question. Only the soldier can answer it correctly with the help of the magician and is now allowed to marry the princess. The orders, however, to throw him in prison because he wanted to kiss her on the roofs that night. When the king learns that the soldier has run out of money, he agrees to be arrested. In prison, the soldier notices that the saving lighter is still in his hotel room. He orders the prince to fetch it, who appears in time for the short court hearing in which the execution of the soldier has already been decided. The magician invisibly loosens the captives' bonds, chains the king with them and conjures up a big nose for him. His daughter wants to avoid this fate, so she agrees and her marriage to the soldier is arranged. The wizard sees his task as done and demands his lighter back. The prince also goes to find a new lover. But the soldier finally realizes that a marriage with the princess would not make sense because she does not love him. He separates from her a short time before the marriage and leaves after kissing her goodbye. Now the princess feels that she loves him too and hurries after him, whereupon things end well.

The puppeteer wakes up in the inn and the landlady's daughter appears. She reveals to him that she cannot come with him. She is rooted in the place and cannot leave her father alone. The puppeteer understands them and walks off with his puppet show.

production

An ancient fairy tale mixes the fairy tales The Lighter , The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep , The Travel Mate and The Swineherd . The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September 1968 and was released in Soviet cinemas on August 20, 1969 . The film was shown in GDR cinemas on October 2, 1970, and on September 15, 1973 it was broadcast for the first time on the first program on GDR television . Icestorm released the film on DVD in January 2005 in the series The Most Beautiful Russian Film Classics .

The film was the screen debut of actress Marina Nejolova .
