action

Baron Malte had fled from Silesia in the last days of the war in 1945 to the Bavarian Forest , where he had a second property. Together with him, a large part of the old village community found a new home and work in his glassworks. But times are bad: the glassworks had to cease operations because a new generator that was due cannot be paid for. Instead, there is an offer from a hotelier who wants to transform the castle-like property into a hotel and pay the baron an additional 80,000 marks.

In this situation, the grandson Martin from Paris appears and wants to encourage the baron to sell. But on a hike through the snow-covered forest property with forester Gerstenberg, he slowly began to have doubts and the thought ripened to take a closer look at the matter. Marianne, the baron's foster daughter, is also against the sale because they would lose their new home.

The necessary documents and books are at the tax office, explains administrator Stengel. Martin makes his way into the city, accompanied by the young Inge and therefore extremely suspicious of her introverted but choleric admirer Otto Hartwig. However, the books are not with the tax office and the bank is also neutral. Administrator Stengel has to explain.

Martin and Marianne found each other through the planned rescue of the property. The fashion designer Simone, Martin's friend from Paris, arrives as a surprise. Although she takes a full bath in front of Martin, he remains completely unimpressed and she feels that their time together is over. At this very moment, Marianne comes in through the door - and misunderstands the situation. Angry, she leaves the party at the inn and Martin stays behind with Simone. Although depressed, he celebrates with us and witnesses an incident that was unmotivated for him: Manager Stengel throws old Kruttke, a cranky hermit, out of the inn. Martin intercepts him and the old man wants to "unpack" the next day for money.

On the way to Kruttke, Martin is shot from an ambush. With the last of his strength he reached Kruttke. He says: Stengel secretly cut 11 cubic meters of wood on his own account and invested it profitably in foreign currency in earlier times; his wife incited him to buy and renovate hotels. He has Kruttke in hand, because he is a multiple poacher. The suspicion fell on the missing Otto Hartwig, who is just arrested in the forest. But he can prove his innocence. Ultimately, the hunt is on the Stengels, who try to flee across the border in the deep snow with papers and cash. But they are caught, Martin and Marianne get married, Simone sends a bridal veil from Paris and the new generator is delivered. The biggest surprise, however, is the replica of the local Silesian church deep in the forest, built unnoticed by the forester and the community.

criticism

"Modernized remake of Paul Keller's Silesian novel, which, despite the technical routine, gets stuck in templates and sentimentalities," said the lexicon of international films .
