The lonely poplar is a former natural monument , a memorial in the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg in the Pankow district . The tree got the name Lonely Poplar because of its lonely location in the formerly wide field not far from Schönhauser Allee .
history
The lonely poplar is a black poplar or (more likely) black poplar hybrid (probably the bastard black poplar ) and is located in Topsstrasse .
At the foot of the poplar there is a memorial stone with the following inscription:
“On March 26, 1848, the first large mass demonstration of the Berlin working people took place here at the 'Einsamen Pappel'. They called for the abolition of arbitrary rule, improvement of wages, introduction of compulsory schooling. "
The text refers to a day during the March revolution , at which 10,000 to 20,000 citizens of Berlin under the poplar had gathered and six demands to the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. Wrote; these demands were passed on to the king, but rejected. Even after this time, the poplar was a well-known meeting place for Berlin workers.
The more than 150 year old poplar had to be felled on January 24, 1968 for reasons of age. A new Canadian poplar was grown from the branches of the felled tree in the nursery of the pioneering republic of Wilhelm Pieck in Altenhof on the Werbellinsee , which was planted on March 10, 1968 in the old location and declared a natural monument. The poplar lost this status in 1990 as part of the Unification Treaty .
