Anneliese Howald not only finds herself ugly, she also does everything to ensure that everyone believes this. When one evening during a soirée nobody seemed to be interested in her again, the attentive actor and playwright Claudio Pauls noticed and promised Anneliese to turn the "ugly duckling" into a radiantly beautiful swan. First of all, he makes sure that Anneliese develops something like a "good taste in fashion" and therefore gets her a job in a fashion store. Then she has to visit an exclusive beauty salon and is "completely renewed" in terms of makeup.

Soon it will be done and Anneliese is no longer an ugly girl. On the contrary: Now the men turn to look at her, and the wealthy son of a banker, Thomas von Bley, also begins to be very interested in the beauty that has blossomed. He succeeds in persuading the woman of his dreams to go on vacation together. But with all the hustle and bustle, Anneliese realizes that she had always only loved Claudio and only wanted to be with him. When she keeps calling his name after an appendectomy , still half under anesthesia, the artist also realizes how important the once supposedly “ugly girl” has become to him.

I was an ugly girl was shot in the spring of 1955 in the CCC studios in Berlin-Spandau as well as in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Eibsee and Grainau (exterior shots) and premiered on August 25, 1955 in Duisburg. The Berlin premiere took place on October 21 of the same year.

Producer Heinrich Jonen and Herbert Junghanns took over the production management. Mathias Matthies and his wife Ellen Schmidt designed the film structures. Evelyn Künneke sang .
