action

In the autumn of 1944, the young lieutenant Praetorius received the order to bring a unit of German soldiers to the front. The mood is bad, the soldiers are tired of war and the refused home leave reduces the soldiers' morale. When the infantrymen come through Berlin, which has just been hit by a heavy air raid, Praetorius still gives the soldiers who are at home here six hours of leave on honor, which the men use in different ways.

Hartmann finds his wife at his old job as a tram driver, Schmiedecke is looking for his child who did not come out of school after the air raid. Kramer's dismayed wife hides his deserted brother in her apartment. Pichler improvised a party in an artist's boarding house that gave the recruit Hellwig his first love experience. Strötzel finally realizes his long-planned war wedding, Jahnke searches for his bride all over town and finally meets her at the train station. After a long time, Krawutke is working as a hairdresser again. Köhler enjoys the hours with his girlfriend. Hagen discovers his wife in a church where she cares for injured people and plays her favorite melody on the organ.

Despite various temptations, everyone resist the temptation to desert and everyone stands by their promise to return on time. On arrival at the destination, the lieutenant can report all of his troops.

criticism

“Remake of the propaganda film of the same name from 1937, relocated to the Second World War, but violent words against the war are now being heard and people are very disrespectful of the Führer. Nevertheless, the film lacks any time-critical distance: the old phrases of military obedience are reproduced without political instinct, ”was the verdict of the lexicon of international film .
