action

After a triumphant concert success, the opera singer Elisabeth Ferber drove home to celebrate the third wedding anniversary with her husband Jochen. She has an accident, remains paralyzed, and decides not to recur. Jochen loves her dearly, but as a sought-after architect is often absent. Elisabeth regrets not having given him any children when she still could, and doubts whether she has the right to bind him to her in the future. Jochen's current project is a princely castle that is to be converted into a hotel. Jochen works with an interior designer who is unable to attend and sends the resolute young student Sybille Erler to replace him. Since Sybille is just as purposeful and unyielding in technical matters as Jochen, their first encounters are tense; then Jochen gives in and accepts Sybille's suggestions. They get closer on the evening of the topping-out ceremony. Sybille's friend Alfred appears unannounced, sees what's going on and informs her that Jochen is married. Sybille does not break with Jochen, but with Alfred. Jochen regrets the intimacy with Sybille and tells her about his wife. Sybille realizes that Jochen will never leave his wife and wants to leave. Jochen becomes weak again and stops her.

Elisabeth, who knows nothing about all of this, is planning to file for divorce in order to release Jochen. The prince who owns the castle gives her the opportunity to perform in a radio concert. During the rehearsal she is too nervous to sing and cancels the concert. When Jochen learns of her nervous breakdown, he rushes to her and explains that from now on he will only work on site. Elisabeth confronts him with her intention to divorce. Jochen is leaving.

Elisabeth, who wants to get a picture of the rival, asks Sybille to come and learn from her that Jochen only loves her, Elisabeth. Meanwhile, Jochen visits an orphanage and adopts two children. The couple reconciles. Elisabeth sings in the radio concert as originally planned. Sybille finds consolation on an interesting assignment in Cairo.

Production and world premiere

The stronger was the first production of the new Capitol-Film, directed by Richard Riedel , which had its capital from the old UFA , i.e. from federal funds. Antje Weisgerber, who was already a prominent stage actress, found the opportunity to play a major character role for the first time in her fourth film. Gertrud Kückelmann was seven years younger than Weisgerber, but The Stronger was already the 13th film for her. Later on, there was also a cross connection between the two actresses in real life: namely the colleague Oskar Werner , who had a longer relationship with Kückelmann in the second half of the 1950s and with Weisgerber in the 1970s. Hans Söhnker was significantly older than his two film partners, namely 18 and 25 years respectively. The use of older actors in the roles of male lovers was widespread in the 1950s ( Rudolf Prack , * 1905; Dieter Borsche , Hans Söhnker, * 1909; OW Fischer , Curd Jürgens , * 1915). Director Liebeneiner had already worked with Söhnker in his comedy The Model Husband , and later used it two more times ( Whenever the day begins , Jacqueline ).

The shooting for the film took place from April 14th to June 1953 in the film studio Tempelhof as well as in the city and castle Büdingen , Upper Hesse. Emil Hasler created the buildings, Dietrich von Theobald was production manager.

The premiere took place on August 11, 1953 in the Europa-Palast in Düsseldorf .

In Erich Engel's marriage drama Before God and People (1955), Antje Weisgerber and Hans Söhnker could later be seen together again.
