He made his debut in Wuppertal in 1927 . After activities in various cities, he worked in Berlin from the 1930s, first at the Deutsches Theater , then at the Schiller Theater and at the Volksbühne .

In 1932 he got his first film role in Frau Lehmanns Töchter at the side of Hertha Thiele , whom he married shortly afterwards. As a French officer in Saint Avil, he first drew the attention of a larger audience in The Mistress of Atlantis . In 1933 he took on the title role in the propaganda film S.A. Despite another leading role in Between Heaven and Earth in 1934 , Klingenberg was unable to assert himself decisively in German film. After the end of the war he was seen a few times as a supporting actor, and he was also active as a radio play and voice actor . He died in a car accident.
