Life

Hertha Thiele was born in Leipzig as the second daughter of a master locksmith. After passing the Abitur and a short acting training, she made her theatrical debut at the Schauspielhaus in Leipzig in 1928 in the Ferdinand Bruckner play "Disease of Youth". With the impersonation of Manuela von Meinhardis in Christa Winsloe's world premiere of "Ritter Nerestan", she achieved her breakthrough as an actress on November 27, 1930. In 1931 the subject was filmed by film director Leontine Sagan under the title Girls in Uniform with her and Dorothea Wieck as the main characters in the girls' boarding school. The film became a huge success, which helped her gain popularity and notoriety.

From then on she was at the height of her career, which would last until early 1933. In addition to her stage work at various Berlin theaters, she played in around eleven film productions, such as in 1932 in Slatan Dudow's proletarian classic Kuhle Wampe or: Who Owns the World? , a film between the petty bourgeoisie and revolutionary dreams.

Afterwards she embodied emancipated women according to her time. After filming the film Frau Lehmanns Töchter together , she married the actor Heinz Klingenberg in 1932 . However, she separated from him after Klingenberg had taken the lead role in the propaganda film SA-Mann Brand . In 1933 she also refused to take part in films with a National Socialist theme, in particular the propaganda film Hans Westmar , in which she was supposed to play the mistress of the title hero. In 1934/35 she was signed by the Swiss Terra boss Ralph Scotoni , but was not used in any film project. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1936. In that year Thiele was expelled from the Reichsfilmkammer and the Reichstheaterkammer and was thus banned from working in Germany.

In January 1937 she emigrated to Switzerland. She worked as a domestic worker and in a Zurich film laboratory, then in 1942 as a prompter at the theater in Bern .

In 1949 she went to the GDR and worked for the Berliner Rundfunk ; the attempt to start a second career as an actress failed because of the mistrust that the GDR harbored towards exiles returning from the west. From 1951 she was again employed in Switzerland as an auxiliary nurse in a psychiatric facility. In 1966 she returned to the GDR, where she received several roles. Until 1979 she was part of the DFF ensemble and appeared mainly in the roles of working-class women; Appearances in feature films were the exception. In 1975 GDR television showed the documentary Das Herz auf der Linke about Hertha Thiele; Directed by Ullrich H. box .

At the 1983 Berlinale there was a retrospective dedicated to her .
