The Mistress of Atlantis is a German adventure and fantasy film from 1932. It is based on the novel Atlantis (also: The Queen of Atlantis , original title: L'Atlantide ) by Pierre Benoit .

action

The film is set in a French colony in Africa . Saint Avil is a young French officer who tells the story of his adventure in the sunken city of Atlantis . In Atlantis, the beautiful Antinea rules her city. Saint Avil was abducted there together with his friend Morhange. Antinea has the reputation that every man is hopelessly falling for her. So it is with Saint Avil. Only Morhange does not let the beauty obscure the senses and remains steadfast. This upset the ruler and she is able to convince Saint Avil to kill his friend. Saint Avil is completely desperate after the fact. Antinea becomes his enemy, but he does not succeed in revenge. Only with a last-ditch effort can he escape from Atlantis and escape the murder by Antinea. Through his story, the passion and bondage for Antinea is reawakened in him. Again he makes his way to Atlantis, but disappears in the desert in a sand storm and is no longer seen.

background

The story was successfully filmed by Jacques Feyder in France as early as 1921 . Georges Melchior , Jean Angelo and Stacia Napierkowska played the main roles in this production, which is called L'Atlantide .

In addition to the German-language version, Pabst also shot a French-language and an English -language version . The shooting took place in North Africa and France. The French film was released there under the title L'Atlantide , alongside Brigitte Helm, Pierre Blanchar and Jean Angelo Saint-Avit and Morhange played. In the English version The Mistress of Atlantis played as Lt. Saint-Avit John Stuart and as Morhange Gustav Diessl. The German premiere took place on September 6, 1932 in Berlin .

Producer Seymour Nebenzahl published a US remake in 1949 with María Montez in the title role. In 1961 another (and so far the last) version of the same name appeared with Haya Harareet in a Franco- Italian co-production.
