action

Irene Beck believes she discovered the affection of the painter Walter Frank when he sketched her profile on a napkin during a visit. With promising looks he invites you to a return visit. Her husband Thomas Beck, however, does not believe in this society and restricts her freedom of movement. But the two meet secretly and arrange to flee to Vienna, which the husband thwarted at the last minute. Frustrated, Irene plunges into Berlin's vibrant nightlife with excess alcohol and drugs. An unimportant relationship with the boxer Sam Tayler alienates the couple even further, without - as Irene hoped - the painter's affection for love is increased through jealousy. When the husband surprises the two in Frank's apartment, she provokes an unambiguous scene and forces Walter to play the role of adulterer. This now also destroys the relationship with the painter. When they meet in a sobering coffee house, the latter, bored of their presence, paints the profile of an older newspaper reader opposite on the tabletop: Irene realizes that his passion was only for art and not for her person. But now it is too late: she is alone and the marriage is going to be divorced. But both find each other again before the divorce judge. Despite a judicial divorce, they decide to remarry.

criticism

“A chamber play staged with stylistic rigor that clearly reflects the empty rituals of the characters and has remained astonishingly timeless in terms of both thematic and formal sovereignty. The film was thought to be lost for a long time, but is now back in a fully restored version. For the television broadcast it was provided with new, powerful music that sets both gripping and bizarre accents and independently comments on the event. "

“The marital and life crisis of a well-off married couple who have become estranged from each other and yet cannot leave each other. - Cool, distant observation of emotional conflicts, masterfully staged in a silent film by GW Pabst. "
