The Eselföterstraße in Rostock is a historical street in the center of the Hanseatic city . It connects Kröpeliner Strasse with Langen Strasse . At its northern end you get to the Heiliggeisthof. It is part of the former Rostock Neustadt. Eselföterstraße is approved for motor traffic.

history

Eselföterstraße, which is one of (today) seven parallel streets connecting Kröpeliner and Lange Straße, was first mentioned in 1311 as platea eselsvoyt . The name Eselsfot (Low German for Eselsfuß ) is probably the corruption of the name of a Rostock patrician family . Within the social fabric of the city, Eselföterstrasse was a residential area for the middle classes, which is why it was mainly built with stalls and only a few gabled houses. Of particular importance for the street was its proximity to the Heilig-Geist-Hospital , which was located between Eselföterstraße and the Faulen Grube , the border to the Mittelstadt . The hospital built its five-aisled church between these two streets, which was demolished in the 19th century. The southern part of the east side of the street was built with simple hospital houses. In the nights of bombing at the end of April 1942 , the west side of Eselföterstrasse was completely destroyed, the east side remained largely intact. The west side was rebuilt after the war with modern architecture. Due to the monumental reconstruction of Langen Strasse in the 1950s, the connection was blocked for a long time; only after the renovation of Langen Strasse after the fall of the Wall , Eselföterstrasse is again connected to it by a pedestrian passage.

The quite attractive Eselföterstraße has a special charm due to its proximity to the Heiliggeisthof, on the east side there are some retail stores and a restaurant, while on the west side you get to a fashion house.

Worth seeing

Eselföterstraße 2 is a warehouse from 1870, while numbers 20 to 22 are simple hospital buildings from the 18th century. Eselföterstraße 26 is essentially a medieval gabled house with a facade that was redesigned around 1800 and provided with plastering, which was restored in 2017-2019 and reopened as a restaurant. Building number 23 is the former lodging house of the Heilig-Geist-Hospital, in the facade of which you can see the year of construction 1589 and which was renovated in 2016-2019 after being used by the Rostock Volkstheater and after a long period of neglect.
