Elsa Wagner
Elisabeth Karoline Auguste Wagner (later: Rühl ; born January 24, 1881 in Reval, now Tallinn , Estonia , † August 17, 1975 in Berlin ) was a German film and theater actress . Since 1916, she has appeared in at least 140 feature films.
Life
The historic defense tower Loewenschede Tower belonged to her parents' house in Reval . Elsa Wagner received her acting training from Maria Spettini (1847–1904) in Saint Petersburg and made her debut in 1901 at the German-speaking Berlin Novelty Theater. With this traveling stage she toured the former East and West Prussia .
Elsa Wagner then received engagements at stages in Heidelberg and Plauen . From 1907 to 1911 she played at the Residenztheater Hanover and from 1911 to 1921 at the Deutsches Theater Berlin . From 1921 until the end of the Second World War she worked at the Staatstheater Berlin , then again at the Deutsches Theater and from 1951 at the Schiller Theater Berlin and at the Schloßparktheater .
Elsa Wagner mostly played supporting roles, such as Marthe Schwerdtlein or the wet nurse in Faust , the Aase in Peer Gynt or the housekeeper in The Exiles according to James Joyce .
Elsa Wagner also made a name for herself in numerous roles as a supporting actress. She was most recently seen in television productions such as the series Jedermannstrasse No. 11 . In 1966 she received the gold film ribbon for many years of outstanding work in German film and in 1971 the Ernst Reuter plaque .
Her grave in the Dahlem cemetery is an honorary grave of the State of Berlin.
