... and the sky above us is a German drama by director Josef von Báky from 1947. For Hans Albers , who plays the war veteran Hans Richter, it was his first post-war film. Lotte Koch plays a widow with whom the homecomer falls in love, and Paul Edwin Roth Richter's blind son.
action
After the Second World War, crane operator Hans Richter returns unscathed to his badly damaged apartment. He can no longer find his friend, a haulier, only his horse Florian and the wedding carriage from back then are still there. The widowed Edith Schröder and her little daughter Helga have sought refuge in the neighboring apartment. She was married to a college teacher. Afraid of an uncertain future and because he doesn't know how else to make a living, Richter, through the mediation of his friend Fritz, whom he met on his way back on the road, starts trading on the black market and doing sledge-shop deals. To do this, he hitched Florian in front of the old wedding carriage and drives across the country. He's making such a small fortune. When his son returned from the war blind due to a nerve injury, but later regained his eyesight, Hans Richter reconsidered his behavior. Not only the love for Edith Schröder, who does not allow himself to be blinded by his expensive gifts and is increasingly distancing herself from him, allows him to find his way back on the right path, but also the horror of his son when he has to recognize how the father his fortune has earned, and turns away from him.

criticism
"Josef von Bakys '... and above us the sky' is a weak tongue and can only be used as a historical document."
"Characterized by superficial optimism and a pompous tendency towards reconstruction, the film seems at times unrealistic, but at the same time impressively shows the devastating destruction of Berlin and is largely apt to describe the atmosphere."
