Friedrich Scherzer is the father of five daughters, whom he has looked after alone since the death of his wife. It is true that he is a warm father; The single widower is somewhat overwhelmed with the upbringing of his daughters, especially since he takes his job very seriously. As the castle administrator, he takes care of the maintenance of the castle, which became American property after the war, looks after the art treasures and the large library. The situation at home worsens when the housekeeper quits and an attempt to hire a new housekeeper fails miserably. An illness of the five-year-old daughter Julchen leads the neighbor, the doctor's widow Frau Hansen, to the Scherzer's house. She considers it her duty to nurse the child to health. During this time she gradually got to know the family's worries and needs. The eldest daughter Karin, however, is not at all good about the fact that "a complete stranger" is now going in and out of the house with Ms. Hansen and could possibly take the place of the beloved, deceased mother at some point.
An employee of the youth welfare office visits the family on the basis of suspicions from the neighborhood. Scherzer erroneously assumes that Mrs. Hansen has filed the complaint.
When his daughters and friends celebrate a lively party in the castle and the American owner of the castle, Mr. Peppercorn, notices this during a visit, Scherzer loses his position as castle administrator.
