Paul Würges
Paul Würges (born March 13, 1932 in Munich ; † November 30, 2017 there ) was a German guitarist and singer .
Life
Born in the Berg am Laim district of Munich , Paul Würges learned his first guitar fingering after the end of the Second World War at the Naturfreunde hiking club . In 1949 Würges completed an apprenticeship as a painter . At the same time he was already performing with Alex Bauer (accordion) and Fritz Kolb (bass) under the name Bavarian Playboys in various clubs in the Munich area. Until the mid-1950s, the formation, which mainly entertained American soldiers, consisted of hillbilly and country music .
After that, the formation was more and more influenced by rock 'n' roll and Paul Würges formed the Moonglow Combo , which was finally renamed Rocking Allstars in 1957 . As the "German Bill Haley " he performed twice in November 1956 in the sold-out congress hall of the Deutsches Museum . Würges, who quickly made a name for himself as one of the best electric guitarists in Germany, now worked with professional musicians such as Ambros Seelos . This was followed by tours to Switzerland, Austria and Poland. In early 1957 Würges sang the title Black Boy Jacky in the film comedy Greetings and Kiss from Tegernsee , which was released a little later as his first single by Decca .
In addition to numerous concerts, Würges appeared several times on Austrian television and in the film Witwer with Five Daughters (1957). In 1959 Würges signed a new record deal with Ariola, which had only existed for a year . This published von Würges German rock 'n' roll and instrumentals. They are mostly cover versions of American hits. Although critics consider his recordings to be of higher quality than those of Peter Kraus or Ted Herold , Würges did not achieve a big hit. Nevertheless, some titles advanced to great successes, such as the own compositions Honky Tonk and Paul's Boogie, recorded in Stockholm . In Sweden Würges was also engaged as the guitarist of the Swedish singer Little Gerhard. This was followed by European tours with the orchestras of Max Greger and Ernst Jäger .
In between, Paul Würges continued to record records. From 1962, fashion dances such as Twist , Madison and Hully Gully were also part of his program. At the beginning of 1964 Paul Würges appeared on the occasion of the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck . The track Olympic Nights , which was released as a single in advance, was a huge live success. In addition, Würges recorded an album with a studio formation under the name The Thunderbirds , which included 12 instrumental tracks. As a musician, he accompanied well-known singers such as Paul Anka , Chubby Checker , Billy Sanders and Tony Sheridan .
When rock 'n' roll was replaced by the now popular beat music in the mid-1960s , Würges was also open to this trend. Several recordings of Würges were distributed under the pseudonym Jeff Jackson & his Explorers on the label Metronome International . He also worked on recordings for department store and cheap labels.
Paul Würges performed regularly with his Rocking Allstars until March 2017.
Paul Würges died on November 30, 2017.
